What Brand of Paintbrush do You Use? Product Review: Purdy Paintbrushes and Roller Covers

by Scott Becker on October 15, 2009

Have you ever painted something and become so frustrated that you wished you had hiredPurdy_brush someone to do the job for you?  Maybe the job didn’t turn out well or maybe it took longer or was more difficult than you thought.

Although the paint that you choose plays a big part in how the job turns out, just as important is the quality of the paintbrushes, rollers and other tools that you use to do the job.

About a week ago I had a client call me and ask me to paint her living room.  After explaining how she wanted me to paint the room, off white walls with green trim she went on to tell me how she thought about painting the room herself but decided against it after painting the dining room and not liking the way that the job came out.

She went on to tell me that although she did have experience painting, the dining room job was much more difficult than she expected and the color was very uneven.  There were even areas that came out kind of streaky.

A few days later I proceeded to paint the living room for this client and the job turned out beautiful.  Not only was the paint applied evenly, the color turned out a brilliant shade of the color that my client had requested.  And although I do quite a few painting jobs, this one was no more difficult than any other.

So what made the difference between the room that I painted and the one done by my client?Although the brand of paint plays a very big part in the way any job will turn out, the quality of the job still comes down to the person doing the painting.  And it’s the tools of the trade, like paintbrushes and rollers covers that will allow one person to do a better job than another.

And Purdy painting equipment especially their paint brushes and roller covers is what gives me the ability to do the kind of work that I do that has my clients call me back.

Not only is their paintbrush handcrafted and of the finest quality parts, it’s the stiffness of the brushes that allow you to get these kinds of results because they allow you the control necessary to make straight lines and apply the paint evenly.  The various styles and handles also give the brush additional control and the brushes hold the paint well which keeps the paint from dripping down the handle.

The other thing that gives you the ability to do this kind of work is their roller covers.  Not only do they apply paint smooth and even, but they never leave small fuzzy pieces of lint behind as do most other brand’s covers.  Although I never overload my roller covers Purdy says that they will hold large amounts of paint which will allow you to finish the job quicker.  Personally, I prefer to take my time because it will only add to the quality of the job.

Along with brushes and roller covers Purdy produces prep tools, applicators and various types of rollers all of which will allow you to get the same high quality results.

So there you have it, my secret that allows me and now YOU to get high quality results whenever you need to do a painting job.  Although the quality of the paint has a lot to do with the job, it really comes down to the person who is applying the paint and the quality of the tools used and my tools are Purdy.

Scott, what a great post! And so true… I have some painting experience and yes, tried to save a little and purchased those throw away paintbrushes that you can get for about $1.00. Learned my lesson the hard way…had to redo the room – with higher quality paint brushes!

We plan on having some indoor painting done soon. So I’ll mention what you said to our handyman. Thanks, Scott.

I agree…the better quality the brush, the better the paint job. I have seen a few handyman and diyers and even pro painters try to get away with cheaper brushes and rollers. They end up will less than stellar results.

Scott, I fully agree. I painted for a living for 8 years and a good brush is a must. Purdy is my favorite. Anybody you has ever done much painting and wants a good job knows to buy good brushes.
