Are We Living Green?

by Scott Becker on April 16, 2009

As I was going over the blogs that I monitor on a daily basis I came across one that I found only recently.  The blog was Destination Green where the webmasters talk about as you probably guessed, living Green and creating eco friendly homes.

The idea of “green” is a really good one and something that we are hearing about more and more every day.  I never really knew that there were so many ways to make your home eco friendly until I began following Lara and Dave’s blog.  Their latest posts on eco friendly insulation and how to save water when using the toilet I found very interesting.  Who would ever think that there were so many ways to save water when you flush the toilet which led me to realize how just a small thing like that could so benefit our planet.

Actually when you stop to think about it it’s really the small shifts in life that add up and together make the biggest impact.  So as I began reading their blog I began to realize that there are so many things that you can do to live a “green” eco friendly life and think that if we all contributed what a difference that we could make for future generations.

However, as I began to compile a list of things that you can do to contribute, I became somewhat concerned.  I began to wonder how many of us actually did think about living “green” and being eco friendly so I compiled a short list of some of the simplest ideas that if we followed probably would not affect our lifestyle at all.

Let’s take a look,

Set the thermostat to 68 degrees and use programmable thermostats to lower the temperature at night and when you are not at home.

Make sure that the lights are off when you are not in the room.

Make sure that you have full a load before using the washing machine and dishwasher.

Check your AC and furnace filters.

Buy efficient energy star appliances.

Repair dripping faucets.

Make sure to insulate and properly seal around windows and doors.

Actually the longer that I thought about it the longer this list was becoming so I decided to turn it over to you my readers.  In an effort to live “green” what ideas do you have?

And don’t forget, when you are eco friendly in many instances you will be saving money as well.  But no matter what contribution you make you will still get a sense of pride of knowing that you did something to make a difference.

Great post. I especially have to enforce the making sure the dishwasher is full before use in my household.

Hey Online Handyman, you just made our day! We are honored that you are reading what we have to say about eco-friendly home projects, and truly appreciate this post which amplifies the cause. Today, I stumbled across PowerScorecard’s list of “twenty things you can do to conserve energy” at http://www.powerscorecard.org/reduce_energy.cfm while doing research for our latest post on solar water heaters…definitely some overlap with the list you started. Also, you and your readers might want to check out http://www.greenirene.com for more ideas and local eco-consultants to help get the green ball rolling.
Many thanks, The Green Team Real Estate

I really like the idea of living green but I think there are some people taking it way too far.

In rural areas, there could be some merit to using animal waste to produce and utilize methane gas that’s emitted.

They’ve used this for centuries in China and a few other countries.

There really are so many small ways we can each help to save our earth. It just takes a little bit from each of us.

I like the idea of simple things you can do each day to make a difference.

It’s amazing how much you can do with a small amount of time and effort each day.

A couple years go by and you are amazed a what’s been accomplished.
